Playa Rica Farm

In the beautiful region of Salamina, Caldas, is the Playa Rica farm, home of Dufay, a dedicated coffee cultivator. Born on this same farm, Dufay has immersed himself in country life since his childhood, learning everything he needed to know about coffee cultivation. His family's history in Playa Rica began in 1959, when his father, fleeing political violence in Tuluá, arrived at this farm. Here, both he and his siblings were welcomed at birth by local midwives, and of all of them, Dufay is the only one who has kept the coffee tradition alive.

The Coffee

Dufay grows the Castillo variety of coffee, chosen primarily for its resistance to rust, a common pest in the region. Their agricultural practices are completely traditional, ranging from coffee cultivation to drying. He uses simple but effective tools such as machetes and scythes, and manages pests with low-toxicity chemicals, thus ensuring the sustainability of his crops.

Current challenges and the future of the Farm

Dufay markets his coffee at outlets in the town and through the local cooperative, allowing him to reach a wider audience, although he faces challenges such as adverse weather and low purchase prices. Despite this, he and his wife are motivated and, with the help of their children, seek to diversify their income by combining the production of specialty crops with tourism. This project aims to keep the farmer heritage alive and allow new generations to develop a love for the countryside, contributing to the well-being of the community. Dufay's family is an example of dedication and love for the land, demonstrating that it is possible to enrich family traditions in the Colombian coffee landscape.
