La Lima Farm

My parents are originally from Salamina, both descendants of coffee farming families. In those lands, they met and married, working in the fields with coffee plants. Later, they migrated to the city looking for other opportunities for their family. My coffee roots are lovingly anchored in those mountains in the north of Caldas. Working on the same land as my ancestors makes me feel rooted, grateful and connected, since history unites me to these lands and makes me responsible for their future. However, I have concern about the future of the farm in the hands of new generations since the farming culture is increasingly left without generational replacement. Young people are not staying on their land since they do not find agricultural activities attractive or profitable. Despite this, there is a glimmer of hope due to new visions of what a coffee farm can be, and the new projects than the next generation can take part in.

The Coffee

I decided to focus on growing coffee in a micro-lot mainly because coffee is one of my favorite crops, due to its history and family roots. In addition, it is a crop very suitable to my land and coffee is appreciated worldwide. I started with the micro-lot as an initial venture due to resource limitations, since planting large areas of crops requires greater investments. On my farm, I grow the Cenicafé 1 variety, an Arabica variety of excellent cup quality, resistant to diseases such as rust and CBD. The quality of my micro-lot on the La Lima farm is due to several factors: the altitude at 1893 meters above sea level, a rested and healthy soil with good levels of organic matter, and adequate agronomic management. These conditions enhance the coffee produced, ensuring that it is premium quality.

Current Challenges and the Future

As an agronomist with experience in the National Federation of Coffee Growers, I have learned about the sustainable and comprehensive management of the crop, as well as the potential of Colombian coffee in the world market. The main challenges to expanding my cultivation business includes financial resources, lack of motivated and trained personnel, and the need for adequate facilities and equipment for the processes. To overcome them, I strive to maintain the conviction of working every day and look for allies who are actively involved in production, processing and marketing. My short-term goals include creating my own coffee brand that represents my roots and my family, generating added value. In the long term, I want this project to be family-oriented, sustainable and producing exportable coffee. Additionally, I would like to work with other varieties and fermentation processes to generate a wide range of flavors and aromas, as well as take advantage of coffee products. My studies in agronomy have allowed me to integrate traditional knowledge with technical knowledge, producing coffee in a more responsible and sustainable way, which is essential for the future of our farm.
